On Friday, Brian Cox invited Succession’s Logan Roy to Newsnight, ending the episode with his character’s iconic catchphrase.
The 77-year-old Scottish actor signed off the BBC show for the final time in 2023, satisfying host Kirsty Wark’s request to do it “in the manner of Logan Roy.”
‘I will attempted to do my best,’ he vowed, and he did just that.
‘That’s all from tonight from Newsnight, we’ll be back in January. I hope you have an amazing festive season wherever you are, whatever you’re doing.
‘And now, just f*** off.’
Brian has now been dubbed one of the country’s ‘greatest living national treasures’ after the video went viral on social media.
Viewer John Hunt called it ‘sensational’ while plenty of others branded him a ‘legend’.
‘Great sign off to #Newsnight tonight. To those that want to change the programme to 30 minutes and reduce the specialist correspondents, well, Brian Cox summed my thoughts up in that sign off,’ X user @funkymunkyf6mfc said.
The remark occurred after it was reported that the political programme will be axed in order for the BBC to save money.
Viewers were angry when it was revealed that the show will be’reformatted,’ with major reporters being dropped, more than 30 Newsnight personnel losing their jobs, and each episode being cut by 10 minutes.
In October, Wark announced her retirement from Newsnight after 30 years on the show.
While Brian gave us his best Logan Roy on Newsnight, he’s previously attacked method acting, attacking his co-star Jeremy Strong’s technique.
‘The result that Jeremy gets is always pretty tremendous,’ he told The New Yorker in a 2021 interview.
‘I just worry about what he does to himself. I worry about the crises he puts himself through in order to prepare.’
‘It’s the cost to himself that worries me,’ he added.
‘I just feel that he just has to be kinder to himself, and therefore has to be a bit kinder to everybody else.’
The actor went on to say: ‘Actors are funny creatures. I’ve worked with intense actors before.
‘It’s a particularly American disease, I think, this inability to separate yourself off while you’re doing the job.’
Succession is available to watch on Sky.
