A Squid Game: The Challenge competitor made the shocking assertion that “Netflix wanted us to have sex.”
Based on the blockbuster South Korean dystopian drama, the reality series followed 456 contestants from across the world as they competed for a record-breaking cash reward of $4.56 million (£3.725 million).
Mai Whelan, 55, of Virginia, ultimately won after spending 16 days hunkered down in a dormitory and undergoing a series of demanding physical and physiological tasks.
However, it has been reported that although candidates were competing head-to-head for the $100,000 prize, they were discreetly pushed to get it on with each other.
In a new YouTube podcast, Roland Hannigan (Player 418), a 23-year-old parkour coach, speaks with fellow contestant Trey Plutnicki (Player 301), a 25-year-old delivery driver, about their experience on the programme.
‘I swear Netflix wanted us to have sex’ Roland told Trey before clarifying: ‘Like, not me and you’.
He added: ‘They were craving for someone to have sex because they made a very big point that we were not tested for STDs. And they made it clear, “We’re not going to stop you”.’
Trey then explained how producers had also ‘put a load of condoms in the shower room’.
‘The condoms ran out. There must’ve been hundreds… The condoms were not used for sex, as far as I know,’ he said.
‘The condoms were used to be rubbed on lips, and not in a fun way,’ he added, saying that lube from the condoms was used as lip balm.
‘After Red Light Green Light, everybody was out in the cold for so long, everybody’s lips were chapped for so long.’
They made these statements when another competitor, player 243 Stephen Lomas, said that several contestants were sent home early because they breached the rules by going hot and heavy with each other before the cameras started rolling.
Players were ‘individually sequestered’ in a hotel before to the event and were ‘not permitted to touch or chat to one other,’ he claimed in a TikTok video.
He went on to share that ‘some people got caught sneaking into each other’s rooms and hooking up, so they got booted from the show’.
Squid Game: The Challenge is streaming on Netflix.
