James May believes the time has come for a completely new automotive programme to replace Top Gear and The Grand Tour.
The 60-year-old broadcaster, who has co-hosted two series with Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond, has called for a new show but insists he and his co-star are ‘too old’ for the job.
Late last year, the BBC announced that it would’rest’ Top Gear for the “foreseeable future.”
It was cancelled in 2022 after Freddie Flintoff’s terrifying crash, thereby ending his on-screen partnership with Paddy McGuinness and Chris Harris.
Meanwhile, it was announced in November that James, Richard, and Jeremy had completed filming for The Grand Tour’s conclusion, with no more series planned.
‘If you wanted to make a serious, slightly more consumerish car show there’s never been a better time for it because it’s a very interesting topic,’ James told The Sun.
‘What is going to happen to the car, car ownership, attitudes to the car, how we use it, dispose of it, how we power it?
‘It’s all interesting stuff, it’s the most interesting time in the car’s history since it was invented. So I can’t believe somewhere or other, a slightly more modern car show won’t emerge.
‘But we can’t do it as we’re too old.’
He hasn’t ruled out working on another project with Jeremy, 63, and Richard, 54, in the future.
He told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: ‘I wouldn’t rule it out, but you do have to bear in mind that we’re all getting on a bit.
‘We’ve got two (episodes of the Grand Tour) in the bag, there’s one coming out very soon, and another coming out a bit after that, but what happens between now and then we’ll have to wait and see.’
Meanwhile, the BBC claimed that, despite the suspension of Top Gear, it was looking forward to working with Paddy, Chris, and Freddie in the future.
In a statement to PA back in November, the Beeb said: ‘The BBC remains committed to Freddie, Chris and Paddy who have been at the heart of the show’s renaissance since 2019, and we’re excited about new projects being developed with each of them.
‘‘We will have more to say in the near future on this. We know resting the show will be disappointing news for fans, but it is the right thing to do.’
