Aldi has unveiled a new wine lineup, and while it’s all about sustainability, we think it’ll make you nostalgic for bygone days.
In order to be more environmentally conscious, the cheap store has replaced typical glass bottles with paper substitutes.
The container is composed of paperboard and lined with a bag to hold the wine, and it is totally recyclable.
However, savvy customers have compared the product to a student night out staple: plain old box wine.
The new Cambalala South African Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc wines are more refined, resembling classic glass bottles.
Facebook users were quick to make the comparison. Morag McGee said: ‘Like wine boxes then so not really new,’ and Robert Hewitt added: ‘Surely wine in a carton has been around some time.’
Commenter Gerry More agreed: ‘So essentially, its just a box of wine in the shape of a bottle,’
But other shoppers weren’t so concerned with the packaging at all. ‘Don’t care. It’s going straight in my large wine glass,’ wrote Marion Mclaughlin.
And Anne Sprout said: ‘Don’t care what it’s made from as long as there’s 13% good quality Aldi wine in it.’
Aldi claims the change will reduce their carbon impact, and at five times lighter than the typical glass bottle, they’ll be a perfect alternative for summer picnics in the park.
They also claim to be the UK’s first supermarket own-brand paper wine bottles, available in shops on March 18, Global Recycling Day, at £7.99 each.
According to Julie Ashfield, managing director of buying at Aldi UK, customers are seeking little ways to make a significant impact on the environment.
‘Our Buying Teams are continuously thinking of how we can evolve our ranges to offer greater value and greener choices. We are proud to be the first supermarket to launch an own-brand paper bottle, helping to drive sustainable change.’
