Exciting news for Top of the Pops fans! A new primetime music TV series will debut on ITV after an 18-year gap, with a popular TV presenter at the lead.
In 2006, the BBC said goodbye to the historic chart programme, which included legendary musicians such as The Beatles and David Bowie playing live for a spellbound audience.
While few music programmes have sought to fill the hole, such as the short-lived Sounds Like Friday Night, ITV now intends to step up with a new show in the face of streaming sites like Spotify and YouTube.
The legendary Clara Amfo will host the new music programme, ITV Studio Sessions, which will run every Friday night beginning in early May. The show will have six episodes spotlighting various performers such as Becky Hill, Cat Burns, Jess Glynne, Tom Walker, Yungblud, and Sekou.
These episodes promise a combination of new songs, oldies, one-of-a-kind renditions, and Clara talks that will introduce viewers to the artists’ experiences and favourite music.
Clara expressed her enthusiasm for the future initiative, emphasising the benefits of music on television for both artists and viewers, looking forward to interesting talks and lovely performances on the show.
Fearne Cotton, a former TOTP host, has called for the return of music television in this new trend, pushing for more affordable live music experiences as ticket costs for live events rise.
The first episode of ITV Studio Sessions will premiere on Friday, May 3, with future episodes airing exclusively on ITV1 every Friday at 10.45 p.m., while all episodes will be accessible for streaming on ITVX.
